Project 1

For the first two days of the 3D design pathway, we had to make ten objects out of various materials such as cardboard, wire, foam-board, straws, cable ties and many other materials. There was no thinking process to this exercise, just to build and make either structures, objects or wearable's. 

Here are a selection of mine:

This object was made up of plywood as the base. The wire spirals are made up of thin silver wire, that I added the plastic covering to them. I wanted the wires to intertwining together so I made the striped green and yellow spiral slightly smaller and more compacted together so it could actually fit in the blue wire. After the wires were together I managed to join the ends the ends together with duck tape to hold them together. Once the ends were secure I taped the ends to the wood base so it would be more stable and secure. I personally like this object because it looks almost like a telephone wire. Or potentially look like part of an obstacle course.  

The next object that I created didn't really had a purpose but ended up being able to 'fly'. The design started off as just four cable ties attached together then pierced through brown paper. I wanted to add something else to the brown paper structure so i glued thin pieces of wood to the inner structure of the brown paper

After making about ten different designs and we drew the objects with a variety of media, to get texture and shading to the drawn objects and piece of work. Here are some of my drawings. 

 The drawing technique that I used for this object was 3 coloured marker pens so each shape would stand out more and become more three-dimentional.  As an object on a page.  

 I used charcoal for this design as I thought it would give this particular object a more structured effect. The shading is more defined, as I have smudged in the charcoal.  

This wired piece was drawn out in pencil, with a lot of definition and time was taken into consideration when I was drawing this as I wanted to get it accurate as possible.   

The next part of project one was to chose one of the objects we created and turn it into the specialised area we want to continue with, Special Effects/Set Design is my chosen area. the product that I decided to make and develop was this cable-ties assembled together in different angles to create an unusual shape.

After feedback from teachers and peers, I decided to turn this creation into a mask to be worn in a cultural way or to resemble a butterfly which I was eventually inspired by this image. This isa a butterfly mask, named Volto-Butterfly by the Venetian Mask Society.

After looking into research I drew a few sketches of what the mask could potentially look like. 

  Here is one of the sketches that I drew out using the influence from the butterfly mask and the cable-tie structure. I thought using the element of using the teardrop shaped cable-ties would create a a perfect representation of unique mask. 

The materials that I used to create the prototype as such was cable ties, wire and plastic covering. I think that the way I made the mask was quite difficult in the sense that the different sections of the mask I had to create. All in all I think I created a good mask that can be represented in a theatre performance or as a fancy dress piece.  

  

Graphics Poster

On the final day of the Graphic rotation, we had to make a poster that represented what we hopefully wanted to achieve in 20 years time. This poster would be representing our work in the V&A museum. 

I produced a few sketches in my sketch book to see what my strengths were, with either collage, typography. The decision I made was to make my whole poster out of typography and text as I feel that, throughout the week it was my strength. 

First of all drew out lightly my first name going horizontally, then the last name vertically. I wanted to added graphics to show what we had be doing this past week. 

The colours that I chose hopefully would complement eachother, two shades of blue I found looked well together. After adding in the blue to some of the letters and the numbers, I wanted to potentially cut into the poster with the whole in the letters e.g O or A. I cut into some of the letters, I wanted to put in a slight backdrop and complement the rest poster. I stuck a piece of blue piece of paper at the back so that the cut out sections would be more captivating to look at. the final element of the poster was to go around the word 'graphics' so it would dominate the poster and become the centre of attention. I also did this technique to the date and the S&A. 

I feel that the poster is very eye-catching and gets straight to the point in what it is trying to promote and explain. I like the minimalist style as you don't have to create a big fancy poster to demonstrate someone work.

Typography

The second day of the Graphics was creating different styles typography using a range of techniques such as the opposite hand, just dropping the pen onto the paper, drawing around objects or using masking tape.  Below are some of the different techniques, of creating the alphabet and numbers. 

 My favourite designs from what I created was the letter P which I created by placing masking tape in the letter's shape, then went over it in two different shades of blue. I like the effect that  it has on the letter because of the lines doing it the same direction. Also another is the letter K or M which was scissors opened out and drawn around with charcoal.  

We as a class put all of our typography examples onto a table so everybody could see what everyone else had done. Also to pick up on different techniques that people could use in the future. 

The final part of day two was to create a 125 by 125mm square with words that we could hopefully achieve or want to be like in the future. I used different fonts which were Gill Sans Bold and Helvetica Neue Bold. I also tried to get a range of sizes incorporated into the design. The colour asspect I used was mainly pencil grey and black pen, but I wanted a splash of colour added of I chose two shapes of red/pink, to liven up the design.

Drawings and Collage

For the final part of the rotation weeks was Graphics. The first part of the week started off by using different drawing techniques and different mediums to draw with. The techniques were to close our eyes, with our mouths, opposite hand and continuous line. Plus we had to draw different people around the class so you get a various collection of images with different peoples faces. I like the different techniques that were used to draw the faces as it brings out a different effect for each.  

The next part of the first day was too draw on A1 paper someones ear. I chose to draw the ear in charcoal as I feel it would create a lot of depth and shadow to the process of the ear. In my opinion I feel as if I could of defined the parts of the ear so much more with mid-tones of grey/black. Maybe I should of sketch the ear out in pencil first then defined it more with the charcoal. After we had finished we all put the A1 sheets together on the floor and looked at the contrast in style and techniques to draw the human ear.  

The last past of the first day was to create a collage of a face using different magazine and paper cut outs of peoples faces. I used different tones of skin to create the face. Of course eyes that weren't the same and two different types of hair colour, also the nose was a different skin tone to the rest of the face. I like the range of skin tones brings to the new face. Also the hair tones add another element to the facial features and brings out the eyes and lips.

After making our face collage, we had to cut a small square and select apart of the face to then draw out. I chose to draw a section of the eye and lots of the hair flowing down the face. 

Here is my final outcome is this sketch below. I think I could of added a little bit more detail to the section, for example more shading and more definition within the hair, but over all I think it is a good attempt.

Building a Bridge

For the final day we had to design small bridges in our sketches books either cutting the pages or using pieces of A4 paper. First of all I designed a simple zig-zag with simples little circles cut into them. Also I added a strip of small paper of the top of the structure so it basically has to ways of using the bridge. I think that this design could actually work was a potential design as it to different elements to it   

The next design I made was cutting into the sketch book I drew a swirled/curved line joining in the middle of the page to get a curve going through the whole of the structure looked different to any other instead of being straight it was more curved and more eye-catching.    

The final design I made was a diamond shape type with diamond holes cut into them to add a slight bit of attraction to the design. This design could potential work as it has two way system that could work with on coming traffic.   

The next part of the day was to be put into groups to build a bridge structure out of bamboo stick, brown tape, cardboard and elastic bands. We also had make the structure as stable as possible so that a table could go underneath it and so that a remote control car could go drive over it. The distance of the bridge was from table to table of about 2 metres away from eachother. There was only two points that were allowed to touch the ground, but we were allowed to attach some parts of the bamboo to the table to make it more secure. Below is the process of how the group developed the design and making part of the bridge.

Unfortunately the weight of the car wasn't able to stay on the bridge for a long time. However if there was more time there might of been a possibility of the design working.

Spaghetti Structure

The second day was about building a structure that could hold three balls but only using 20 pieces of spaghetti and a hot glue gun. First of all we had to draw some sketches of what our potential structures could look like using different mediums, pencil, colour pens and biro. 

After the sketches I tried to work out what was the best possible way to build the structure. I thought the best possible structure was triangles. After a few attempts of figuring out a ways of holding the balls, I stuck with the triangular structure.  This was the sketch that I transformed my structure from.  

After gluing the spaghetti together, I photographed the structure on a table with lighting a a white backdrop to create some shadows and adding small people to the structure to make it look like a building of some sort.

The final part of the second day was to create some packaging for it, only using 2 A4 pieces of paper, 1 A1 sheet and prit-stick. What I did to protect the structure was to screw up the two sheets of A4 paper an put that into the structure then wrap up the spaghetti like a present. The packaging had to be able to protect the structure from a basketball being dropped onto it from a height. Unfortunately all of the structures packaging didn't support the balls force.

3D design

This week was all about three dimensional design work. We first started off by drawing different shapes on to a piece of large paper that could be transformed into products that you could wear, sit on or live in etc.. 

My favourite designs that I drew was probably the jewellery design, in which we had to sketch out the bottom of our shoes. We then had to make the drawing of the soles of our shoes into a piece of jewellery. I thought mine would work quite well with turning it into a necklace, plus adding a bit of colour to make it look more appealing to the eye. Another sketch design that I liked was turning a square, a circle and a triangle into a ipod/mp3 player, that was a completely different design to any other. I tried to make it look like was an earring so it had multipurpose use. 

The next part of the day was to create a paper structure to hold a full litre bottle of water and 30cm off the ground, and only using one piece of A1 paper. I tried to make tower box shape as my first attempted, but unfortunately it was unstable and didn't work. I tried another technique of screwing up the piece of paper and trying to making as supportive as possible and 30cm tall. I put a empty bottles of water on the structure that worked but with the full litre of bottle it didn't have the same effect.  Below you can see the process of of how my design collapsed once the water bottle was placed on top of it.

The final part of the day was to create a structure that you had to either sit on or stand on it, but we could only use 8 pieces of cardboard and tape. The design that we created was a triangular shape that was supported by another pyramid shape with circular tubes supporting the back of the seat. However when I sat on the seat, the structure wasn't supportive enough and collapsed onto the ground. I think if more support was added to the back and the actually seat area it might had held the weight of a person sitting down or standing on it.
